This might be more academic then actually useful, but have you tried 
using anything else to see if they will mirror up ok? I see in your post 
they are both shown as identical drives (size, heads, etc) but maybe one 
of them is throwing some error. I never heard of a "Middleware Error" 
before, but then I am more used to hardware raid cards then software raid.

I would try booting something else (FreeBSD, Linux or (ick) windoz) just 
to see if they can be mirrored without failing. Then check the size of 
the mirror and maybe run a few quick tests. If they do fail, maybe get 
more info on why and that might help the FreeNAS issue.
