[Novalug] unknown monitor and desktop selection

I can understand my FC6 having this problem, but a brand new
Ubuntu 11.10 has the same problem, with a standard install.
At least the install DID work - the second time.  First time
hung, no reason.  FC6 ran youtube vids just fine and dandy.
Ubuntu messes up the color horribly.

Network setup was primative, or I can't find stuff that's hiding
somewhere.  Actually hadda do the /etc/hosts thing by hand.

I'm still digging into the new U.  Added C++ compiler stuff
and the X11 dev stuff.  New compiler errror-ed and warning-ed
a lot more than the old one did, so that's the fixit for
today.  Also had to work around the nanny-U to run as root.

So far, I'm not impressed.  But, it's on a test box and I'm on
a learning curve, so...
