For the Network I normally used the "network tool" it's down near the clock
on the desktop by default. (-:sorta like that M$ Widows helper is:-)

Use
 $: sudo -i
to get you a root shell when you need it.

and
   sudo nautilus
Is a way to get a 'root' File Browser, but personally I find it more of
pain then useful.
  In a shortcut you can use:
    gksu nautils
 to create a "almost" one click way to open a browser as 'root'.

Since first running Ubuntu (and even some time before)  I've never found a
reason to Login as the ROOT user.
