If the landline is for the occasional or emergency use I'd approach
Verizon and get that monthly cost reduced. For example, do you have
a plan including special long distance rates, or unlimited local
calling, or added options like caller id or voice messaging? If so,
you could eliminate those and get the most basic service, maybe
even paying for calls by the minute.
