on the computer you want to reach (not the one you're going to reach it from)

at a prompt type
$ /sbin/ifconfig

if you have an IP address on the same network on both machines you should be able to ssh from one to the other.

You can also with newer hardware that auto-flips the ethernet cable to a crossobver, just connect an ethernet cable from one computer to another - make the IPs something on the same subnet eg 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 and you should be able to ssh over the wire.
