It depends on the application.

I have a couple of EC2 instances (mini, running Arch Linux) that I use
as Tor routers which set me back about $27us/month.

The advantage of EC2 is that you can configure one node the way you
want, power it down, and then copy it a couple of times to save
yourself some time.

Dreamhost offers VPSes but they're kind of expensive.  I know some
people who use Linode for various things.  I've personally used
neither of them.
