I am doing a little experimentation with Augmented Reality (AR) and picked up the (Kindle) book "Prototyping Augmented Reality". It is intended to show examples of working with AR without a lot of software knowledge. It uses the Processing IDE (processing.org) which I had never heard of. I haven't gotten very far into it yet but it does contain chapters on working with the Arduino and going mobile with the Android SDK. AR is an area that continually fascinates me and I think is so full of potential for innovation that is is hard not to get all worked up when I talk about it. If you're looking for something for intellectually stimulating to mess around with I would recommend both.
Also, if you want to introduce someone to software development I would definitely recommend taking a look at the Processing IDE.
