I looked back at how I created a couple of simple desktop
launchers when I installed F16 on my laptop.  It seems any
file xxx.desktop with an appropriate set of text entries
is a launcher displayed on the desktop.

There is a program to create/edit these .desktop files,
/usr/bin/gnome-desktop-item-edit.  It is installed with
the "gnome-panel" package.  As far as I can tell, no man
page came with the package.  I did find a simple one online.
