updates your system to the most current. Just run it once a week, once a day, whenever. Review what it's going to update and choose whether or not 'now' is a good time to do it.
You can YouTube to get an idea of how things work. For example, here's a hit on installing in VBox.
Here's a quick one on pacman update.
I find YouTube more helpful these days than just 'Googling' at first.
