Taking it to where he is upgrading
(assuming that is the situation)
is probably the best solution,
as he needs the SIM chip or similar
changed anyway, right?
+1 on the iOS upgrade and reset
options. Or keep and jail break it? ;-/
In Fedora16, and presumably others,
plugging an iPhone4 in gets an
WhomEver's iPhone drill down to
DCIM folder that can be copied
whereever on the machine, albiet
slowly, IMO.
iTunes limits where you can copy
to and from, I have seen errors
of must sync to proper machine,
etc. Some Ubuntus were not
showing photos or similar gphoto
based bugs, IIRC.
YMMV, my first smartphone,
and not upgraded yet,
next time (iDrop, etc) likely
something else...
The Tether is handy, haven't
gotten the bill for this yet,
maybe I have to create an
App to pay for it ;-/
