[Shenlug] Linked images in a web page

I have the basic design of my updated web pages in place. Now to start
adding the images. Am finding it difficult to find info on doing
so--most sources seem to assume I already know the basics. Could someone
point me to good info on the following:

1) Site will use a lot of thumbnails. Linking the thumbnail to a larger
image is easy, but what comes up is the larger image in a new
window--and nothing more. (I know I could set it up as a pop-up window,
but if I do so, anyone who has pop-ups turned off will not see it?) I'd
like to do a bit of styling to the new image in its window--maybe a
border around the image and a caption or brief comment. Can I do that by
styling for the image file itself, or do I have to go to the trouble of
setting each image up as a separate page?

2) How do I code a link in the image window to go "Back" to previous
page (so I don't create an "orphan" for the viewer, espec those who are
inexperienced enough not to know they can use "Back" button of their
browser)? Please note that the same image might be linked from different
pages, so the link cannot be absolute--it will have to link "Back" to
whatever the last page viewed was, just like the Back button on the
browser works.

Thanks to anyone who can point me to good info on these two issues.

~Harvey
