Thanks for the report, Doug.

There was a multimegabyte patch applied just after the release of that
beta (21.5.5 was basically a checkpoint release in case things got
really really broken by the megapatch), and literally everything in
core editor functionality (buffer and string functions, all IO) changed.

Unless this can be reproduced in a recent beta (21.5.16 would be OK,
but CVS would be better---we're due for another beta release), I don't
think we'll do any more with your report.
