I agree about timer.el; APIs like run-at-time are going to be
developed over and over if we don't provide them.  By the same token
they should be robust and compatible.  thingatpt is more complicated:

;;; thing.el --- find language-specific contiguous pieces of text

(thing is in the xemacs-base package.)  The principle is the same, of
course, but apparently the practice is different.  If we're serious
about eliminating fsf-compat, it's time to try the merge again.
