I'm not sure how it works or exactly what the API is, but apparently
it's possible to do something like

(let ((o (make-overlay there back-again)))
  (overlay-put o 'face '(:bold t :font "-tolkien-hobbit-*--12-*-elvish-0")))

and it Does The Right Things [tm].  Similarly with text-properties.
