ldap -llber lost

this is my bad.  i tried to fix a problem recently and broke things when --with-ldap is explicitly given.

How?  The problem is that there's no consistency in library
requirements and arrangements across LDAP packages.  Find out what
works for you, figure out how configure can test for it, tell us,
we'll put it in.

Since the LDAP person has been inactive for years, the alternative is
to just rip it out.  :-)
