Yesterday's cvs vanilla (aka not xft).

Even then, an xlsfonts of my 12K fonts takes 0.36s.  make-bold-font
takes 1s.  It's not a lazy evaluation we need, it's a decent one.

Anyway, I'll keep working on it tonight.
