Sorry, I've been busy with family stuff for a few days. It'll be
another couple before I can give this the thought it deserves.
If it's not clear, my basic position is that we should get the Unicode
stuff working and see how much backward compatibility we need and how
to implement it as we go along.
However, unless you think that is nuts in _principle_ (as opposed to
pragmatically nuts because the need is too big to ignore), you may
want to hold off on a response until I can lay out ideas for dealing
with the pragmatic side of this process.
