it seems that it has to do with the size of the msg. Mails with large
attachment are the problem in xemacs, but still I have to look  that
up in detail.

problem is that under recent X-free versions the shift key does not
work properly, that is control shift g, is the same as control g for
xemacs, but I do as you suggest set is debug on quit.
