How to get rid of text attributes?

If I run the occur command it highlights the text which matches the re using
a rather obnoxious (to me - I hope I haven't insulted anyone here) tan
background.  Copying the text and pasting to another buffer retains that
highlighting.  Is there some command I can execute (maybe like
unhighlight-region) to remove the highlighting from a chunk of text?
