That's actually good... should eliminate your local settings and
packages from the equation.

Not yet. :-(

However, that question does make me wonder... Could this be a XFT issue?
Steve T, possible?  Giacomo, if I were in your shoes I'd try a non-xft
build.  I'm not completely sure of the configure option (don't have a
XEmacs source tree handy to check), but probably `--without-xft'.
