Tracker issue 631 describes the error on my G5 (Mac OS X 10.5.8) with an 
assertion in mule-ccl.c (ln. 2162).  I took the liberty of tagging the 
assignment to Aidan.  It looks to be a place where somewhere in the 
C Macro code a Lisp_Object is assumed to always be an int.  Commenting 
out the assertion at line 2162 lets the program compile, and the 
resulting program is so far running--haven't run it too long, however.
