As far as I can tell, that this worked in XEmacs 21.4 was probably just
an accident.  It certainly doesn't work in Emacs now.

I think something like

(let ((gnus-newsgroup-name "")) (gnus-post-news nil))

might work.  `gnus-post-news' is a really awkward function which should
really be rewritten to not be as, er, weird.
