True. The Xft renderer can draw onto an X11 Drawable. So can cairo,
which can output to X11 windows, Win32 and Mac. When I'm done, we
should be able to use pango output independent of the GUI toolkit.
Since the current Xft and Gtk display is intertwined into in
redisplay-xlike, I could easily add an option to make it draw using
pango as well, if anybody is interested. It's just one more set of
However, if pango is available, then Gtk almost certainly too. Is there
any reason to prefer Xt or Gtk? Your Xresources would be one. Font
compatibilty would be another.
