In a bizarre way. ;-) You know that astro-nut in the news lately?

Former YHSLUG presenter Christian Vogler, Ph.D. focuses his work on
facial expression recognition. This morning, he came by my office to
let me know his work had been mentioned, although the article doesn't
mention him by name:

The second-last paragraph reads:

"David Dinges, a professor of experimental psychiatry at the University
of Pennsylvania, has been developing a system that automatically monitors
facial expressions, using computer algorithms to detect signs of
psychological distress. The system was tested in the NASA Extreme
Environment Mission Operations project in an undersea lab off the coast
of Florida last year. Rather than seeking obvious emotions, the computer
looks for minute, subconscious facial movements that betray psychological
stress. The optical recognition system is currently undergoing tests in
Dinges's lab, he said in an e-mail."

Christian wrote the grant proposal for the project, and worked closely with
two others: Siome Goldenstein at UNICAMP, Brazil and Dimitris Metaxas at
Rutgers and University of Pennsylvania.
