hi yhslug community,

this upcoming conference at Loyola College in columbia, maryland, looks very
interesting.

  see http://www.cuwireless.net/summit

      i'll be attending.

marco figueiredo, one of the conference organizers, is the founder of
the Center for Community Informatics at Loyola College. marco worked formerly as
a high-performance computing engineer for NASA Goddard. he explained to me last
year, "phil, i was not having an impact on the world working at NASA Goddard,
so i shifted my work to use my intellect and energies to expand access to
technology in brazil and other places."

marco is a big fan of linux and is one of the nicest people you could
meet. i'm really impressed with what he has done with the Center for Community
Informatics, which is using the time and talents of graduate students to create
open source technology solutions for underserved populations worldwide. (see
http://cci.cs.loyola.edu/)

            - phil

btw, the conference director for this conference, sascha meinrath, is getting
his doctorate at the university of illinois, focusing his research on community
empowerment and the impacts of participatory media. see
